In the author’s note she points out these edits and pays homage to the real individuals whose lives in the mid-to-late 20th century were affected by the true events which inspired this book. Not that she didn’t take creative license, as she changed certain aspects of the historical record to suit the narrative. I applaud the authenticity with which Richardson presents every fine-tuned detail of this story. The new day dawns soon if you can make it through the night. One moment draining the life from the hill people through starvation and sickness only to cradle them to her bosom the next with a whisper of comfort. The power she wielded against the fragile inhabitants that occupied her hills was both awe inspiring and frightening. She’s cruel, twisted, and astonishingly beautiful. Kentucky is presented as thoroughly and as bravely as are the other characters in this book. Richardson has crafted at once a nostalgic and searing look at life in the Kentucky hills in the 1930’s in the latter part of the Great Depression. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a fascinating piece of historical fiction. This next selection is one of those, so a big thank you to the member who chose this book as our September discussion selection. One of the things I value most about being a part of a reading group is that I’m exposed to books that I otherwise may have never stumbled upon.

What is the Enlightenment? There is no official answer, because the era named by Kant’s essay was never demarcated by opening and closing ceremonies like the Olympics, nor are its tenets stipulated in an oath or creed. Enlightenment’s motto, he proclaimed, is: “Dare to understand!” and its foundational demand is freedom of thought and speech. What is enlightenment? In a 1784 essay with that question as its title, Immanuel Kant answered that it consists of “humankind’s emergence from its self-incurred immaturity”, its “lazy and cowardly” submission to the “dogmas and formulas” of religious or political authority. You will see lots of hard-talking tough guys in gray suits and gray hats running around city streets socking one another in the jaw and plugging one another with bullets - plenty of action to be sure. To gain an initial feel for the novel, please go to Youtube and watch a snippet of one of those 1940s black-and-white noir films, like The Naked City. Actually, this is the 2nd of the author's The New York Trilogy, bookended by City of Glass and The Locked Room. Brown broke him in, Brown taught him the ropes, and when Brown grew old, Blue took over."īlue is a detective and it is Blue we follow on every page of this sparse (less than 100 pages) novel set in 1947 New York City. Later there is White, and then there is Black, and before the beginning there is Brown. Here are the opening few line: "First of all there is Blue. Paul Auster's Ghosts (1983) reads like the square root of a hard-boiled detective noir novel, an off-the-wall, bizarre mystery where there is no crime and the whodunit is replaced by a meditation on the nature of identity. The only difference being is the inability to kill Mallory. Both are used by their respective females and later you need to kill the man they're with. He didn't want to act on Vlad, and I find it very strange how similar Dwayne and Denise are to Roman and Mallory. Also I feel like the end game, free-roam, chaos is kind of a hint that just maybe, Niko doesn't change. However, I don't think he, nor roman would last in these relationships. This potentially leads to Niko having a normal life with Kate. He wants MORE money and even says "think of my honeymoon." these greedy actions end up to him being the one to die on his wedding day. The other option is to take Romans advice. Preventing Niko from having a normal life. Your first choice is to take Kates advice, which is essentially to NOT do the deal with Dimitri and instead kill him (Niko might have added that last part.) This will result in Kate dying at Romans wedding, rather than Roman. The more I think about this the more I hate it and feel there is really no good answer. Spoilers btw but oh well its been what 13 years? ♥♥♥♥ you. |
